[[Forum Reminder / Lesson: Replying ]]
http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/92 7102

This is not directed at every user, but this is a healthy reminder. A forum is about more than just the opening post. A forum is a discussion. Even more than that, it is a central gathering point for many people to discuss things. For that reason, it might be a good idea to treat each reply as if you were making a new topic. That is, unless you can justify it, find it interesting, etc, just don't post.

Here are a few basic guidelines on what not to do, that I've seen frequently, and which you might be banned for if I catch you doing it:

1) TL;DR
2) Don't care
3) <insert insult>
4) /thread
5) this is against the rules
6) use the search bar
7) Win/Fail
8) This thread/topic is now about ________

If you don't care, didn't read, or want to talk about something else, then you aren't staying on subject, which means that you either need to:

1) Create a new topic
2) Don't do anything
3) Think harder and/or read

This is where I say something like you've been warned.

[[Newgrounds Related Blogs]]

> Official BBS Topics - These topics are all "official" in some mannor. They were likely recreated at some point or another and now all of one type of discussion should go on in here. There are also several helpful threads and official BBS moderation rulings inside. All and all, its an extremely useful collection of links if you are interested in a high traffic topic, want to make a new topic, or you want to find out about BBS House Rules.

> BBS Goldmine - Recently excivated, this list of topics are full of pure hilarity, or most of them anyway. Many users have contributed to help find these, and only the best of the best have made it on to the list.

> Contests - There are usually monthly contests in specific forums around the site. This is a good idea to figure out whats going on whether you are into art, flash, or audio. Occasionally there are writing competions as well. Have you created a contest? Add it here.

> Newgrounds Library - by HybridOfSouls - I'm not the only to have attempted a large collection of interesting threads, nor am I the first. Recently ported over to a blog post is the Newgrounds Library, this collection is of monstrous size and helpfulness. Its a running archive of tons of different kinds of bbs happenings. Feel free to peruse its multiple newsposts for lists of its helpers, multiple pages of links, and other tid bits that have been included. Highly recommended for people looking to brush up on their NG Community History.

> NG BBS FAQ - Aside from topics being constantly recreated, you'll find that a lot of questions are constantly being asked in new topics. To spare yourself the grief of making a topic and possibly be flamed, check out this list of questions to see if its already been answered. Is there a question and answer that should be on this list? Feel free to post to the newspost with suggestions.

> NG Musician's Blog - - by Rig - - If you're into music, this one is definately for you. You'll get a list of everything from suggestions on how to improve your music, to tutorials on this site explaining how to start. It is also a great jumping point for anything related to the Audio Portal and/or forums. Definately check this one out.

> Answers to Frequently Asked Questions - This is the general Newgrounds FAQ, it isn't a blog, but I feel it belongs in this list of useful links. There's a link up above for it, but in case you didn't catch it or you can't find the answer in the NG BBS FAQ, checking this link is probably a good idea.

> C & C Index of Active Clubs - This is the list of active clubs in the clubs & crews section, sorted by topic. Its recommended that you check this list for the existance of a club before you try to recreate it. Its also a great way of finding out whether something exists if you don't know its name or the search isn't being responsive. If you have created a new club, please post it to the user page and I'll add it as soon as possible.

Newgrounds API FAQ - This is the help blog for adding ads to your flash movies. Any questions should be asked and answered here. Thanks to Psycho Goldfish for that one.

<More Coming Soon>
Do you have an extremely helpful blog that doesn't fit into one of the categories above? If the answer is yes, reply to this newspost and I'll add a link to it here. I merely request that at the bottom, or in a conspicuous place you add a [< Back To Main/Index] link so that the entire group of "blogosphere" pages remain connected and usable. If your topic does fit into one of the categories, consider adding it to that newspost instead. This Main/Index page should remain as clutter free as possible.

The OTHER preacher.

.

Dimplomacy.

.

"McCain was down at the end of the table and we were talking to the head of the guerrilla group here at this end of the table and I don't know what attracted my attention," Cochran said in an interview with The Sun Herald in Biloxi, Miss. "But I saw some kind of quick movement at the bottom of the table and I looked down there and John had reached over and grabbed this guy by the shirt collar and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair to tell him what he thought about him or whatever ...

"I don't know what he was telling him but I thought, 'Good grief, everybody around here has got guns and we were there on a diplomatic mission.' I don't know what had happened to provoke John, but he obviously got mad at the guy ... and he just reached over there and snatched ... him."

Base reaction to Iran:

"Republican presidential candidate John McCain was asked about an Associated Press report that $158 million in cigarettes have been shipped to Iran during George W. Bush's presidency despite restrictions on U.S. exports to that country.

"Maybe that's a way of killing them," McCain told reporters, smiling as he waited for a cheesesteak sandwich at the Primanti Brothers restaurant. His wife, sitting next to him at the counter, poked his back without looking up."

If a man's first thought is killing the population, where are his instincts? Where is his judgement in the crucial moment?

Jun. 20, 2008 | 11:38 AM Emi says:

"6) use the search bar"

Do you mean saying it without providing a link? Or just saying it?

Jun. 20, 2008 | 12:25 PM gumOnShoe responds:

Saying it without providing a link OR saying it once it has already been said. There is no reason to post it more than once, and you can still give some thoughts on the subject at hand (in most cases). Also, contacting a mod is a far superior option than telling the user to use the search bar.

It isn't the case now, but occasionally the search bar function stops working, and then saying something like that doesn't help at all.

Heh, have fun trying to get the idiotic masses to actually read threads.

I highly doubt that will ever happen without banning 95% of the users.

I should do that.

Why can't we tell people that it's against the rules?

Jul. 10, 2008 | 9:32 PM gumOnShoe responds:

I don't care if you peer pressure them by pm, but after its said once you are just bumping the thread and continuing the problem. contact a mod anyway if its against the rules they'll be banned. We have more discreet ways of dealing with problems now.

Think about it this way. We established forum rules and mods to deal with problems and remove them, so drawing more attention to the problem than is neccessary just highlights that there are problems negating the point of trying to remove it.

You monster!

Jul. 15, 2008 | 11:47 PM Cericon says:

Also, what I said about no one wanting to marry you, that was a joke because you locked my marrige thread.

IT WAS MY SPECIAL DAY! WHY COULDN'T YOU JUST LEAVE IT BE!!

Jul. 16, 2008 | 10:28 PM gumOnShoe responds:

I got the joke, it would have been funnier if perhaps there was an ounce of truth to it.

As to your special day, I understand that people like to have fun on the bbs, but inside jokes and popularity contests lead to spam and others being excluded. Feel free to do that elsewhere on the site.

Jul. 18, 2008 | 4:53 AM Cericon says:

Why not post that marrige threads are against the rules?
After Twilightfox's and my own, there doesn't seem a need for any more of them.

Jul. 21, 2008 | 10:44 PM gumOnShoe responds:

If I post every offense that it is against the rules there will be a long list, one which will not serve anyone. The only people to read that list will be the people that are banned and it will simply squelch any creativity that any of you have left, daunting you and making me look like egotistical destroyer of all things fun.

I assure you thats not the case. While it is ultimately a good idea to have a codified set of rulings for users to follow, allowing ourselves to be held fast to a single codified collection of rulings will lead to stagnation and ritual posting. The rules are a guideline meant to inspire good posting and to get you thinking about the way you post. They are non conclusive and allow the moderation team to deal with problems on a personal level with each ofendee.

Clearly doing this is more just than a mechanic banning which has no remorse and allows for no room to grow.

Ultimately moderation is not a solution to any percieved problems on the bbs. It is a banner, to be sure, inspiring some to follow and some to seek a way to undermine. Moderation is a check for balance, but can only respond.

Topics and responses are the lifeblood of the forum, over regulation will cause that blood to seap out into other forums leaving us with a dry, dead husk. Undermoderation will allow viruses and bacteria. Moderators must find a balance in the bbs, themselves and its populace. Rules don't allow for that balance, they simply inspire the right line of thought.

So, I will not announce that marriage threads need not be created because there may come a time when the bbs needs that. That is not today or anytime soon, that I am aware of, and the existance of each thread is taken on a case by case basis. Don't recreate it, but don't expect a proclomation for the ages either.

Jul. 26, 2008 | 2:04 AM badfurrykitty says:

what are things that people expect more out of a flash? Quality is obvious of course :P

Wait what is TL;DR?

random: Did you got that user name by actually stepping on gum?

Jul. 26, 2008 | 12:59 PM gumOnShoe responds:

This thread was about the forums and posting. Read a few reviews and look at the top 50 for your first question.

TL;DR = too long; didn't read. Some people post that directly on the forums without responding to the topics.

I had gum on my shoe a few months before signing up and the idea kind of "stuck" to me.

jesus christ. that barely ever happens and when it does it either gets ignored or induces mass hilarity, not a problem really...

Jul. 27, 2008 | 12:10 AM gumOnShoe responds:

when I made this topic it was happening in one out of five threads I clicked, which was too many. Its slowed down, but you know what, go cry about it.
